DESCRIPTION | This study-unit offers students content knowledge, vocational pedagogy and application knowledge related to media literacy education. The study-unit starts by providing a general overview of the contemporary media literacy education pedagogies and a comparative overview with the traditional pedagogies used in the past. Prospective teachers will then move from an initial discussion introducing theories, methods and their application, to an evaluation of the practical use of the different media literacy pedagogies for effective vocational education within secondary school learning contexts. Study-Unit Aims: The main aim of this study-unit is to introduce prospective teachers to the concepts of media literacy pedagogies. It will develop their theoretical knowledge about the main trends and pedagogies currently applied in media literacy learning contexts. It will also encourage students to participate through experiential participation during the application and use of these pedagogies. This will deepen their knowledge and facilitate the comparison between the 'traditional methods of teaching' and how such methods have developed into current trends. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - evaluate various types of media literacy pedagogies. These include predominant pedagogies such as problem based learning (PBL), multimodal learning contexts, signature pedagogies, universal learning facilitation; - understand how these media literacy pedagogies can serve as effective tools in accordance to particular contexts of teaching; - describe how such media literacy pedagogies can be applied for various individual learning abilities. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply appropriate media literacy methodological theories to a variety of pedagogical contexts; - design alternative learning and teaching methods and pedagogical resources which one can use in different media literacy educational contexts; - actively implement learning and teaching methods during real life and actual media literacy learning interventions.
