DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study-unit is to introduce participants to the theoretical basis and practical approaches of audio-visual archiving. While the general principles of archival theory and practice apply for whatever form or medium, audio-visuals do present creators with challenging decisions in terms of creation, preservation, accessibility and Intellectual Property Rights. The unit will start with the theoretical basis and will also include visits to a number of audio-visual creating institutions. Students will become familiar with the different formats, the emerging technology to preserve such material and the changing perspectives towards digital disruption. Participants are expected to attend the visits and take active participation and note similarities and differences between the set-ups, facilities, services and holdings of the audio-visual infrastructures visited.
