DESCRIPTION | The study-unit provides a coherent overview of the archives of the Maltese Universitates, the Notarial Archives, and the historical private archives on the island. The unit focuses on: the administration, functioning and archival practices of offices and officials involved; an overview of the role of the notary in the Maltese context; the formation, accumulation, managment, and archival organisational models; the concept of private and public record; the methodologies of arrangement and description and related issues. It also discusses these archives in a wider historical and legal context taking into account the different customs, laws, and political influences on Malta from the middle ages to the early British period. Case studies and site-visits are included. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to familiarise students with the archival procedures, the administrative functions, and the legal framework of the Maltese Universitates and notarial archival tradition in Malta. It also offer insights into the private documentary heritage and archival collections preserved in Malta or related to the island. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Examine and discuss the local and international legal context in which the institutions functioned; - Identify the main archival procedures and the archival creators involved; - Define and acquire knowledge on the development of the role of the notary, the characteristics of notarial documents and the broad legal system; - Demonstrate deep knowledge on the concept and typologies of public and private records; - Recognise, analyse and discuss the links of the Maltese archival heritage with other contemporary institutions abroad. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify, arrange, describe, and create access to public and private records; - Be able to deal with different typologies of archives and legal terminology; - Engage critically with secondary sources on the topic; - Transmit knowledge and awareness on the multiform archival heritage of Malta.
