DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to the publishing industry, particularly within the current technological context. It will help to understand the changing roles of stakeholders (publishers, libraries, researchers, university research management). The study-unit will also introduce the basic models for measuring value and impact in the printed and electronic publications contexts. It will also include a hands-on experience with using a digital publishing platform. Topics to be covered in the study-unit include (but are not limited to): • History of recorded information • Communicating information • Book publishing • Print-based publishing • Digital-based publishing • Journal and scholarly publishing • Authorship • e-books and print books • Open access • Publishing and post-truth • Freedom to publish. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to outline the major tendencies in scholarly communications exploring the introduction of digital publishing and the relationship between print and digital publishing. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Analyze trends in the communication of information, specifically through diverse publishing activities, practices, and industries; • Understand the impact of diverse kinds of publishing on various information, social, cultural, political, and economic contexts; • Identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of diverse kinds of publishing, as well as the products and services of publishing (such as e-books, print books, streaming services, libraries, repositories, databases, etc.); • Make comparative analysis of different publishing channels and apply assessments for impact and value. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define the principles that govern print and digital publishing; - Apply hands-on skills in using an electronic publishing platform, being familiar with the basic stages of preparing an electronic publication; - Assess impact of printed and electronic publications; Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Bawden, David and Lyn Robinson (2012). Introduction to Information Science. London: Facet Publishing. Optional: - Topical weekly readings (from the news and publishing industry press) may be assigned for specific lectures. |
