DESCRIPTION | Students will be asked to spend approximately 70 hours in an ICT-related company or agency, or assisting on a research project, in order to gain experience of a real-world work situation as 'employees' or 'researchers'. This experience will prepare the student for the job market and the professional world. Companies and projects will be selected based on their relevance to the programme of study. Specifically, opportunities will be available in areas related to NLP, AI and/or language technologies generally. In order to cater for the contingency that, for some reason, no placements are available to a student, a mini-project with a practical, work-oriented content will be assigned. Study-unit Aims: - Exposure to a practical, real life industrial and business environment; - Familiarisation with the opportunities that exist for careers in HLT; - Development of contacts which might be useful for a career; - Enhancement of employability opportunities; - Participation in the day-to-day run- face practical solutions to work related problems; - Undertake duties required for employment, especially working to a deadline; - Identify possible future careers in ICT and HLT-related areasning and operation of a company/agency. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - face practical solutions to work related problems; - undertake duties required for employment, especially working to a deadline; - identify possible future careers in ICT and HLT-related areas. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - put theoretical knowledge of Human Language Technology in the context of the requirements of a work environment; - make use of their experience of a real work environment to inform future decisions about research; - evaluate and report upon the requirements and challenges of a professional career.
