| DESCRIPTION | Students will be guided during tutorials and seminars to investigate in greater depth an area of particular interest, to critically evaluate theoretical perspectives in their chosen area and to develop a critical understanding of the material encountered in the literature. Students will practice and develop skills in evaluating and comparing existing theories, and/or undertaking theoretical or practical work of an advanced or an original nature. Students will be required to write their findings in the form of a dissertation that shall be in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Faculty. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the dissertation are to provide an opportunity to students to conduct an independent investigation in a particular branch of Mathematics under the supervision of their tutors, and to communicate (verbal and written) their research in a clear and effective manner. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives in their chosen area of study; - Demonstrate a critical understanding of the methods used in research; - Assimilate complex mathematical ideas and arguments by applying abstract mathematical thinking and exhibiting mathematical intuition. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse and evaluate information that is relevant to the research project; - Report and discuss the results of their research in a clear, structured and concise form; - Manage time effectively and efficiently; - Evaluate the strengths and limitations of their research and propose possible further studies. Textbooks: Depends on the Area of Dissertation. |
