DESCRIPTION The creation of a portfolio project which consists of the independent creation by a student of a practical project, applying skills learnt during the B.Communications (Hons) course. The running of a case study may also be offered as a project.

Normally, a set of briefs related to any or all of the following subjects are given to the students in the final weeks of their B.Communications (Hons) course third year: photography, journalism, communicative design, marketing communications, audio and video production. Students are expected to choose two projects (MCS3920 and MCS3930) to carry out in the time stipulated by the Department. For each project, and under a separate cover, students need to provide a write-up of not more than 1000 words indicating how and why the expression was chosen for each of the two projects; the decision-making process that was experienced during production, and a critical appraisal (strength and weaknesses) of the final product.

Study-Unit Aims:

To assess individual student ability to work with skill sets learnt during the course of his/her studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- evaluate his/her practical decision-making process during the creation of practical work;
- critically appraise his/her final, creative, communicative production.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- use skill sets and knowledge gained throughout the course of studies for practical ends;
- work individually on creative projects within specific areas pertaining to Media and Communications.
