DESCRIPTION This study-unit integrates multiple qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. It equips students with the necessary tools to be able to use correct tools for different types of biomedical research.

Study-unit Aims:

- To teach students basic research methods;
- To train students in identifying the most appropriate method for different research tasks;
- To facilitate the understanding of the limitations of particular research methods; and
- To highlight the advantages of each study method and the research tools involved.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- list the various types and modalities of health research methods;
- select an appropriate research method to answer any particular research question; and
- explain the limitations of various methods and tools in research.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- discuss the science behind case definition, population selection, epidemiology research methods;
- explain qualitative research methods;
- select the right research methods; and
- describe the different research tools that can be used to answer the research question.
