DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on surgical clinical skills development including bedside manner and is delivered through lectures and bedside small group teaching.

Study-unit Aims:

This study unit aims to:
Familiarise students with clinical examination skills including chest, abdominal, breast, vascular, neck and limbs;
Teach students the expected bedside manner;
Impart to students the importance of treating patients with dignity and respect.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- conduct clinical examination of the various systems including the neck, chest, breast, abdomen, limbs and vascular systems;
- identify normal findings and recognize the normal variations between individuals;
- identify abnormal findings and interpret these findings within the clinical context.

Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- examine a patient thoroughly and confidently while protecting the patient’s dignity;
- identify which system/s requires to be examined;
- elicit the appropriate signs;
- apply different clinical tests appropriately;
- interpret clinical findings;
- draw up a list of differential diagnoses;
- discuss an appropriate management plan.
