| DESCRIPTION | The aims of training at the Medical School are to lay the educational foundations for a lifelong career in medicine and to equip junior doctors well for the first stage in their working lives as Foundation doctors. Patients have a right to be treated by new doctors who are competent, safe, and confident. This study-unit is largely clinical apprenticeship where students have hands-on experience, do things, and not simply observatory. This is supplemented by case-based discussion to help the students translate their acquired theoretical knowledge to the on-the-ground clinical scenario. This study-unit will allow students the opportunity to consolidate knowledge acquired throughout their previous clinical years of study. Study-unit Aims: This skills-based study unit enables students to demonstrate the knowledge they have accumulated for patient management during their medical course in order to develop competences which will be assessed in the final synoptic examination in obstetrics and gynaecology. The eventual graduate will therefore develop skills in the speciality that they can safely and competently use in whatever line of medical practice they will choose as a long-term career. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to bring in the knowledge and understanding they have acquired during the previous study units in the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology, especially in the first semester of year 5. They are required to demonstrate that they have reached a level where they can transfer their accumulated knowledge into the practical clinical skills as listed below. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out a consultation with a patient; - Assess clinical presentations, order investigations, make differential diagnoses, and negotiate a management plan; - Provide immediate care of medical emergencies, including First Aid and resuscitation; - Prescribe drugs; - Carry out practical procedures; - Communicate effectively in a medical context; - Apply ethical and legal principles in medical practice - Assess psychological and social aspects of a patient's illness; - Apply the principles, skills and knowledge of evidence-based medicine; - Use information and information technology effectively in a medical context; - Apply scientific principles, method and knowledge to medical practice and research; - Promote health, engage with population health issues and work effectively in a health care system.
