DESCRIPTION | The aim of the dissertation is to give the student the opportunity to conduct an independent research project in a specialist area of Mediterranean Studies, utilizing the techniques developed in the research methods study-units. The student will develop a specialised research project agreed with a supervisor(s) and the Board of Supervision. The student is expected to write a literature review, collect data, conduct data analysis and provide a discussion of his or her findings with an interdisciplinary regional framework of analysis. Study-unit Aims: The aim of the dissertation is to give the student the opportunity to conduct an independent research project in a specialist area of their degree, utilizing the techniques developed in the research methods study-units. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop a deep understanding of the theory and current state of knowledge in Mediterranean Studies and the specific sub-field in which they conduct their research; - develop an advanced understanding of methodological issues in the area in which they conduct their research. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - write clearly and concisely, explaining why their topic of research is important, critiquing previous research, and providing a coherent discussion of their findings; - manage a research project from an initial idea to the development of a research question, collection of data and the presentation of findings in a dissertation. ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||
