Study-Unit Description

CODE MEC4002

TITLE Engineering Analysis of Composite Structures

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Mechanical Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides an insight into the mechanics of composite structures through the analysis of the macromechanical and micromechanical behavior of a lamina leading to the macromechanical analysis of a laminate of a typical composite structure. Various failure mechanisms are identified. The unit also provides students with the necessary tools to identify typical phase and lamina material properties through mechanical testing. The second part of the study-unit focuses on the use of numerical modelling via finite element analysis for the engineering analysis of complex composite structures.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit introduces students to the basic concepts of mechanical behaviour of composite materials and structures. The study-unit provides an insight towards analysis of laminated fibre-reinforced composites. Numerical models by means of finite element analysis at the micro-level and macro-level of composite materials and structures are also introduced in this module. This study-unit also familiarizes students with different experimental techniques used to establish the structural performance of composites.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assess composite structures and materials to achieve high structural performance at minimal strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios.
- Develop analytical and numerical models to assess the design load of various composite structures and components.
- Define a series of mechanical testing techniques to establish the structural material properties of composites.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Design, analyse and develop composite fibre-reinforced structures to meet the requirements of various intended engineering structural performance through analytical and numerical methods.
- Establish optimal constituent materials and fibre orientation to obtain particular structural strength.
