DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces the engineering fundamentals of refrigeration systems and Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. The specific topics dealt with in this module are vapour compression refrigeration and heat pumps, vapour absorption systems, Psychrometry, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems. Study-unit Aims: The main aim of this study-unit is to give participants a solid background in the area of building services engineering, in particular HVAC systems. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Distinguish between the different definitions of humidity and work out problems involving humid air; - Recognise the various components making up a refrigeration system or an HVAC system; - Analyse a refrigeration system or an HVAC system; - Appreciate the importance of energy efficiency in buildings; - Gain practical experience into air conditioning maintenance by means of an assignment/lab experiment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Troubleshoot a refrigeration system or an HVAC system; - Calculate a building/system heating/cooling load; - Design a refrigeration system or an HVAC system.
