DESCRIPTION The purpose of this study-unit is to develop a basic understanding of the common clinical conditions causing morbidity and mortality and of importance to the podiatrist. Principles underlying clinical practice including history-taking and physical signs of disease are outlined. The student is introduced to the causation of disease, signs and symptoms, investigations and management.

The lecture programme focuses on areas of practical importance for the podiatrist/relevant health professional and refers them to their own area of practice.

Students are required to attend a cardiopulmonary resuscitation course at some stage of their course in order to be prepared for clinical practice.

Study-unit Aims:

An overview of clinical medicine, it's principles and practice. The lecture programme will cover the various systems forming an integral part of internal medicine including:
- Cardiovascular disease;
- Respiratory disorders;
- Endocrinology;
- Gastrointestinal disease;
- Renal disease;
- Rheumatology;
- Neurology;
- Related areas, including the importance of preventive medicine and nutrition.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Exhibit a basic understanding of some of the commoner medical conditions they are likely to encounter within their practice, both within the hospital and the community setting, and with a wider international perspective.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assist healthcare delivery within a team setting;
- Understand basic principles of common diseases and their impact on the individual and healthcare system;
- Understand the impact of lifestyle changes and the importance of adherence to these and any pharmacological and other therapy advised;
- Assist with educating patients.
