DESCRIPTION | Objective The Internet and the World Wide Web in particular have become major tools in the discovery of products and services, accessing information, promoting a company image and as a marketing tool. Good planning of a web site is therefore important to a business organisation, as in many cases, it is the first and sometimes only contact many potential customers have with an organisation. This is a practical study-unit designed to initiate marketing studies students into the “behind the scenes” of the World Wide Web, consisting of hands-on classes in a computer Laboratory. Students learn the basic skills needed to design and create a web site using HTML and graphic packages. The study-unit also stresses upon the importance of user friendly navigation, colour schemes, use of graphic components and clear communication. The basic Internet protocols of data communication, the Domain name system, hosting servers, client browsers and their interdependency are also covered. This study-unit focuses on how a web site can be used to meet business objectives and on the technical skills required to create and manage a web site. The lectures will embody a high proportion of practical work. This study-unit is structured for students who have had no (or very little) experience in IT. Course Content The topics of the study-unit will include: - Principles of the Internet and the World Wide Web. - The Use of Web Sites in Business. - The History and Definition of the World Wide Web - The concept of Hypertextuality - Building a Web Site using simple HTML. - Applying Advanced HTML and Associated Techniques. - Tools and Products available to help in Web Site Design and Use. - Publishing the Web Site to the World Wide Web Assessment At the end of the study-unit, students have to produce a web site as an individual project.
