DESCRIPTION | This study-unit builds on the student's knowledge of human resource management and organisation theory. It focuses on the key elements of classic and contemporary leadership research, and highlights the importance of continued influence of leadership studies on organisational policies and practices. This study-unit presents leadership as a trait, style and skill, and reinforces how charisma and situation are critical for leadership. Furthermore, it examines the aspects of culture, ethics, politics, and conflict as critical dimensions of organisational leadership. Study-unit Aims: 1. To provide students with an understanding of developments in the field of leadership studies. 2. To encourage and develop an interest in the role of leadership in organisations. 3. To offer students structured models of leadership in organisations. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Understand the different theories of leadership as they apply to management; Appreciate how styles of leadership impact organisations; Understand the role and basis of leadership power and control. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Distinguish between leadership and management; Demonstrate an understanding of the different theoretical approaches to leadership; Explain and demonstrate how leadership skills can be developed.
