DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the discipline of logistics within contemporary supply chains. Its content reflects the importance of supply chain management in establishing competitive advantage. This study-unit provides students with the capability of delivering success through logistic systems ensuring that the right product outputs of an organization are delivered to the right customers, at the right location, in the right condition, and within the right time framework. Its content evaluates the strategic role that logistics plays in the modern global organization. The unit provides an understanding of the methods, techniques, and practices involved in logistics management planning. The topics covered include: key performance supply chain indicators, inventory planning and warehousing, transportation strategies, distribution network configuration, supplier management, and the management of risk.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit provides the student with an understanding of the key concepts of logistics within supply chain management. It instills a critical awareness of the individual elements of the supply chain process and an appreciation of the critical role logistics management practice has within contemporary business processes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. Establish the contribution of an effective logistics system within supply chains.
b. Recognize how the development of an appropriate logistics and supply chain strategy enhances overall business objectives.
c. Acquire knowledge on a range of logistical and supply chain issues which require consideration for appropriate decision-making processes in contemporary organizations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. Evaluate different configurations of inbound and outbound logistics systems within a supply chain in a global context.
b. Identify and evaluate the strategic issues in a logistics system.
c. Synthesise the management issues involved in logistics decision-making.
