DESCRIPTION | The study-unit provides a grounding in the concepts and principles that are essential for the design of successful information systems. Using systems theories, the study-unit will introduce the student to the social and technical factos which underpin the business context of organisations and drive the needs for information. Systems concepts are applied to interrogate the systemic relationship between people, organisational structures, and business process systems. Case studies and videos will enable the student to critically assess the role of information systems and digital technologies in global organisations, and explore their contributions to deliver business value and support business strategy, to improve connections with stakeholders, to create better business processes, and enhance decision-making. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to design and manage information systems effectively, in order to support business processes, improve management decision-making and gain competitive advantage. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe systems theory and its application and relevance to organisations; - Identify the social, technical and organisational factors in information systems; - Recognise the impact of information systems and digital technology on organisations. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse critical components of an information system within an organisation; - Effectively design information systems that align with business needs at strategic and operational levels; - Demonstrate critical analytical skills on digital technologies in new ventures.
