DESCRIPTION | Making the right career choices and acquiring the necessary workplace skills will most certainly have a profound impact on your life. This study-unit will provide students with the skills required to secure the right role and operate effectively within the workplace. This is an intense programme requiring students to prepare for a number of case studies and preparing assignments. You are expected to actively participate during the lecture and address fellow students in the class. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit for students to take a structured approach to prepare for their career search, application processes, interviews and recruitment assessments. This study-unit also aims at giving students exposure students to real workplace situations with the aim to develop essential soft skills. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand how recruitment works and into the expectations corporate recruiters, hiring managers or HR Managers; - Identify channels to find and apply for vacancies; - Better manage anxiety prior to interviews or job assignments; - Learn how non-verbal communication and personal attitude can affect the interview process and work assignment outcomes; - Understand how organizations work and what employers expect; - Learn and practice workplace soft skills expected by employers; - Experience the underpinnings of a successful team, communication and decision-making skills. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify where the best career opportunities are; - Create a professional CV, job application and online profile; - Prepare for interviews, and psychometric tests, for successful placement and career - Learn how to negotiate job offer and deal with rejection; - Learn how to critically analyse interview questions and workplace situations; - Know how to behave within a work environment; - Able to set personal goals; - Manage anxiety before job interviews and / or work assignments; - Know how to apply communication skills within the workplace; - Exposure to working in teams, problem solving & decision making; - Adapt to workplace changes. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: This study-unit does not require mandatory textbooks. Student are encouraged to: - Access ample free resources online (shared in class); - Regularly read publications like the Harvard Business Review and The Economist; - Read & listen to business podcasts (shared in class). |
