DESCRIPTION The study-unit provides participants with an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the key theoretical and practical issues in management. Participants will acquire a complete picture of the indispensable requisites for the functioning of organisations in a global competitive environment, as individuals, as part of inter-functional teams and as leaders. They will become familiar with the key issues in management, and the multiple roles, tasks and skills of a manager in any organisation. Participants will examine the often paradoxical needs of managing, given the often conflicting requirements to balance long- and short-term objectives. The study-unit will also address the principles of planning, organizing, directing and controlling, the management of change, group dynamics and work teams, and organisational culture.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit introduces the nature and principles of management to participants working in a technical environment. Participants are made aware of the multi-faceted nature of management, its concepts, theories and frameworks.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Characterize the management process and understand how management differs within and across organizations.
- Understand the range of activities carried out in a managerial role.
- Consolidate the concepts, models, and techniques which are at the disposal of managers in a rapidly changing world

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use a wide range of skills to work as managers in complex and challenging environments.
- Effectively implement change in order to align organisations with their environments.
- Evaluate the implications of wider management issues such as diversity, ethics and globalization.
