DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted to second year midwifery students. This study-unit will further advance the teaching of midwifery clinical skills through the use of lectures, demonstrations of skills and opportunity of hands on practice in the clinical laboratory. Students will develop the skills and knowledge about how to:

- Admit a woman in labour;
- Perform vaginal examinations;
- Take care of a woman in labour;
- Take care of women with epidural analgesia;
- Preparing for and conducting a normal birth;
- Immediate care of the mother and baby after birth;
- Collecting blood samples;
- Placental examination;
- Examination of the newborn at birth;
- Documentation.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to assist students in the development of skills and knowledge of intranatal care of the mother and the immediate care of the mother and neonate following childbirth.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand how to take care of the women from admission in labour until childbirth and the immediate postpartum period;
- Understand the care of the newborn immediate following delivery.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Perform vaginal examinations;
- Take care of women during normal labour;
- Take care of women having epidural analgesia;
- Prepare for and conduct a normal birth;
- Take care of the mother and newborn immediately after birth;
- Collect blood samples;
- Examine the placenta;
- Examine the neonate;
- Document progress during labour and document the neonate's condition.
