DESCRIPTION | This study-unit addresses the physiological changes that occur in the pregnant woman and the pathophysiological processes involved in disease states. In addition, it provides the tools necessary to the rational for diagnosing and managing common disease states affecting pregnant women at all the stages of pregnancy and the puerperium. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to help the students to develop the skills to recognise and understand the management of medical and surgical conditions that could occur during all the stages of pregnancy and the puerperium. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe basic diagnostic measures needed to confirm medical and surgical disease states that may occur during pregnancy and the puerperium; - Discuss the basic management and treatment of medical and surgical disease states that may occur during pregnancy and the puerperium; - Identify the general principles of pre-, intra-, and post-operative care in pregnant women; - Identify the potential harmful effects of medications during pregnancy and the puerperium. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and institute the initial management of the common medical and surgical conditions that affect the pregnant woman - e.g., cardiovascular, respiratory, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, endocrine, psychiatric, etc.; - Identify postpartum and puerperal problems and be familiar with their management; - Manage professionally and sensitively the problems of the postpartum period and puerperium.
