DESCRIPTION This study-unit is planned for third year midwifery students for them to gain understanding and acquire practical neonatal resuscitation skills. The study-unit will focus on the principles of resuscitation, the initial steps in resuscitation, the use of resuscitation devices, chest compressions, endotracheal intubation and medications, ethics and care at the end of life and the megacode.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims for the student midwife to become knowledgeable in what resuscitation of the newborn involves, gain awareness and practice the skills involved in neonatal resuscitation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Show an understanding of identifying a baby's need for resuscitation;
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the sequential steps in neonatal resuscitation;
- Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate actions needed in neonatal resuscitation according to given case scenarios.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate appropriate practical skills in assembling resuscitation equipment correctly;
- Ventilate a baby using intermittent positive pressure ventilation and T-piece resuscitaire;
- Perform chest compressions adequately;
- Identify the right medication for a given case situation;
- Prepare equipment;
- Assist in endotracheal intubation;
- Perform correct sequence of entire resuscitation procedure when given a case scenario.
