DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted at third year student midwives and will support students to become knowledgeable of the ethical-legal framework of the midwifery profession as the foundation for professional practice. It includes ethical issues in midwifery practice; professional issues and accountability; rights, duties and responsibility in midwifery practice including aspects of professional development; legal issues in midwifery which includes the legal framework in which midwives work; negligence and duty of care, clinical negligence, malpractice issues, documentation and the support of good practice.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study unit are to:

- provide the student the opportunity to develop further knowledge, critical appraisal and reflective skills in relation to professional, ethical and legal issues that impact upon the midwifery profession;
- explore the legal and ethical framework for professional practice address in key issues of professional responsibility and accountability.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyse the values which underpin the midwifery profession;
- discuss the ethical-legal framework of the midwifery profession as a foundation for professional practice;
- appraise the extent to which midwives fulfil their role as autonomous and accountable practitioners within the parameters of the statutory framework;
- analyse the terms 'duty of care' 'negligence' and 'malpractice' within an ethical, professional and legal framework.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be competent to practice in a safe and ethical mode by adhering to the legal and ethical codes of midwifery practice.
