DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is covered by tutorials and clinical placements on maternity wards. It involves a general revision of all midwifery skills. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this practical study-unit is to allow the integration and application of the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired during the previous 3 years of the course. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Understand the importance of providing holistic care to the woman and her family during all the stages of childbearing; • Understand the need of time management and prioritization of skills in the midwifery profession; • Have confidence and know how to work independently; • Recall and reflect upon gained knowledge to apply it in their setting; • Realize that they are in a position to teach junior members of staff and their client; • Acknowledge the importance of delegation; • Understand the importance of documentation and detailed hand overs; • Understand the importance of working within a team with other professionals; • Show an understanding of building a trusting relationship with women and their families. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Provide holistic midwifery care to mothers and their foetus/newborn during pregnancy, or following a normal vaginal birth, or an operative caesarean section birth; • Prioritize care and manage time effectively; • Show an ability to work independently; • Apply theoretical knowledge in practice; • Supervise and teach junior students and clients; • Delegate care to junior students within their abilities; • Show initiative in suggesting changes and implementing changes to care; • Show an understanding of the ethical and legal issues in midwifery care; • Document care accurately and concisely; • Provide an accurate and complete hand over to other members of staff; • Participate in ward rounds; • Show an ability to form good work relationships with other members of staff; • Show an ability to form good work relationships with clients, their partners, and their family.
