DESCRIPTION • Preparation of basal culture media;
• Preparation of enriched culture media;
• Preparation of selective culture media;
• Preparation of special culture media;
• Advanced identification techniques for Gram Positive bacteria;
• Advanced identification techniques for Gram Negative bacteria;
• Staining techniques (ZN, spore stain, Auramine O);
• Identification of parasites;
• Basic Fungal Structures;
• Fungal Reproductive Structures.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this study-unit the students should be able to:
• Follow standard operating procedures on how to prepare different types of culture media used in microbiology;
• Carry out basic microbiology tests to distinguish and identify different strains of bacteria, and including fungi and parasites;
• Become familiar with public health testing techniques.
