DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces bacteria and fungi, their morphology and classification, growth and reproduction. Laboratory aspects of culturing, staining and safe disposal are also discussed. Content: • The Bacterial Cell • Bacterial Morphology • Bacterial nutrition and growth • Bacterial Cultivation and basic laboratory techniques • Staining – The Gram Stain • Staining - ZN and other stains • Pathogenesis and routes of infection • Bacterial genetics • Taxonomy and classification • Sterilisation and Disinfection • Introduction to Mycology • Fungal Classification and Reproduction • Fungal Growth Learning Outcomes: By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to: • Classify bacteria; • Explain methods for the growth, culture and cultivation of bacteria; • Apply the metabolic characteristics of bacteria to the medical sphere; and • Relate the basic biology of fungi and therefore be able to differentiate between fungi and other Kingdoms according to the characteristics pertaining to this Kingdom.
