DESCRIPTION | This is a structured lecture-based study-unit consisting of two sections. Section A (Normal Blood Physiology) highlights fundamental basic pathophysiological concepts relating to blood function and necessary for the understanding of blood pathology, whilst Section B (Haematopathology) is a discussion of the individual blood disorders/group of haematological conditions focusing primarily on the nature of these conditions rather than diagnosis which will be the subject of discussion in MLS2019. Students will have up to 3 x 1–hour lecture sessions per week to discuss this study-unit. Content: Section A – Normal Blood Physiology • Introduction to haematology • Haematopoiesis • Red cell structure & function • Normal haemostasis Section B – Haematopathology • The anaemias & their classification. Iron deficiency • Macrocytic anaemias • Congenital & acquired haemolytic anaemias • Leucocytes structure and function • White cell disorders – benign conditions • Platelets structure and function • The Acute leukaemias • The Chronic Leukaemias • The myelodysplastic syndromes • Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas • Multiple myeloma & Paraproteinaemias • Chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms • Congenital & acquired coagulation disorders including disseminated intravascular coagulation • Thrombotic disease and antithrombotic therapy • Haematological disorders in systemic disease • Basic principles of stem cell transplantation in haematology Learning Outcomes By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to: • Describe the basic pathophysiological principles necessary for the understanding of the various blood disorders; • Classify haematological disease; • Discuss the various individual conditions or group of disorders that affect the haematological system; and • Formulate a list of appropriate diagnostic parameters which will be dealt with in greater detail in study-unit MLS2019.
