DESCRIPTION This study-unit enables the student to:

• Distinguish the role of the haematology laboratory in investigating and diagnosing haematological disease;

• Recognise haematological diseases, which may affect the pregnant patient;

• Interpret clinical presentations pertaining to haematological disease and translate this data into appropriate laboratory tests and investigations to aid diagnosis and management in haematology;

• Be fully acquainted with basic haematological and coagulation laboratory techniques, such as the full blood count and coagulation factors;

• Distinguish the role of the Transfusion laboratories from Blood donor testing to serology and blood products preparation;

• Define the different components that are separated from blood (e.g., red cell concentrate packs, Factor VIII platelets and others), their immediate use in a clinical setting, and under what circumstances (and pathophysiological conditions).
