Study-Unit Description

CODE MME3109

TITLE Materials Engineering in Practice

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

DESCRIPTION This unit will consist of a practical continuation of materials selection topics. Further topics regarding materials selection will be covered including:
- Multiple constraints and conflicting objectives
- Designing hybrid materials and case studies
- Materials and industrial design
- Materials and the environment.

The study-unit will also include a significant portion as a practical project where the students will use laboratory facilities and the Ansys Granta Edupack software as part of their coursework.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to explain further concepts in material selection additional to those already covered. This is to give further scope to the selection exercise. The unit also aims to give focus to the environmental aspect of the selection process in view of particular requirements that distinguish different industries. Through the project, the unit aims to provide a structured environment for the learner to apply theoretical concepts to practical components and critically analyse an existing selected material in a holistic manner including factors such as performance, design, environment, manufacturability and sustainability.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Describe and analyse a material selection problem taking into consideration multiple constraints and conflicting objectives;
2. Describe how application requirements and product design specifications are translated to practical material selection and manufacturing considerations;
3. Explain the design of hybrid materials;
4. Explain the use of hybrid materials from a practical perspective;
5. Correlate materials with their industrial design with in an experimental situation;
6. Describe the material life cycle in terms of resource use and consumption;
7. Demonstrate the selection strategies employed considering considerations related to sustainability.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Define the function and requirements of a product for which the material selection is required;
2. Carry out a survey of materials used in practical existing components and compare the results with established designs;
3. Carry out an environmental analysis for materials selected for a particular product;
4. Apply and use specialised software to generate performance indices and material selection charts to provide effective material alternatives;
5. Apply critical analysis to established products and the materials selected for them.
