Study-Unit Description

CODE MNE1303

TITLE Foundations in Microelectronic Circuits

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Microelectronics and Nanoelectronics

DESCRIPTION The study-unit gives an outline of various ideas underlying microelectronic systems design. The following outline ideas are qualitatively covered: components of a signal acquisition system, sensor and analogue and digital conversion. The study-unit also provides users with the mathematical modelling and analysis of simple electronic components. Students will also be provided with an introduction to the use of simulation tools for circuit analysis including dc, frequency and transient analysis.

The Microelectronics design flow for analogue and digital system will be introduced including - VHDL and schematic entry, Simulation types: analogue and digital, dc, transient, ac, mixed-mode. Layout and post-layout simulation. Design rules and layout-vs-schematic checks.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to impart to students knowledge about the basic elements of typical microsystem consisting of micro sensors and actuators, and analogue and digital circuit processing. The unit also introduces students to the basic analysis of microelectronic circuits and will provide knowledge about the design flow of a typical microsystem.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and explain the constituent parts of a microsystem;
- Comprehend the underlying principles in the analysis of simple microelectronic circuits;
- Comprehend issues of integration of the constituent parts of the microsystem.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Determine ADC/DAC requirements for a microelectronic system;
- Identify and comprehend different sensor devices;
- Analyse basic microelectronic circuits;
- Use basic CADENCE tools.
