TITLE Fundamentals of Mental Health Clinical Practice 1

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Mental Health

DESCRIPTION During this study-unit, students undertake an evaluation of their own interpersonal skills and relate this to the material available concerning the subject, from the social sciences and the three core subjects of psychiatry, psychology and sociology. The starting point of mental health nursing skill requirement (psychological helping) forms the comparator for this work and enables the student to establish where their strengths and weaknesses are. The use of active listening, the compliance - collaborative - concordance continuum, empathy and sympathy, Interpersonal study-units (specifically Peplau) and links to the talking therapies (counselling, CBT, DBT, Gestalt) constitute the main base of the study-unit. Each student's baseline evaluation will form the basis of a personalised study scheme layered over the core programme.

- To enable the student to explore the personal qualities used to develop clinical effectiveness in relation to helping people with a mental health problem or illness.
- This study-unit also aims to equip students with the necessary evidence based skills to be able to interact and function in the clinical mental health field.
