DESCRIPTION This study-unit presents aspects related to intellectual disability from a social model perspective as opposed to a medical model one. In this view, the person is presented in a holistic manner with the same basic needs as others in society but different means of satisfying the needs. Such a holistic approach is believed to influence quality of care provided in a range of settings. This study-unit will also explore standards of service, quality of life, equal opportunities and equal rights. Social inclusion and integration through education and employment, participation in sports and leisure as well as access to sexual expression shall be addressed.

Study-Unit Aims:

The objective of the study-unit is to provide students with a theoretical as well as a practical background to understand various principles and aspects of intellectual disability.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recall the basic principles of intellectual disability;
- Recognise the relationship between the intellectual disability and mental health;
- Explain the holistic responsibilities towards people with intellectual disability.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the main features that characterise a person with disability with improved terminological and socio-analytical tools;
-Theorise on the various models of disability and their emergence;
- Describe the main principles of holistic care in relation to intellectual disabilities.
