Study-Unit Description

CODE MNH2002

TITLE Group Dynamics in Mental Health Nursing

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Mental Health

DESCRIPTION This unit involves the study of human beings in relationship to other persons, singularly and in groups. The unit also explores—in theory and through in-class exercises—the real-life application of various aspects of group dynamics including (but not limited to) leadership, motivation, perception, power, and decision-making.

It is designed to specifically apply in situations where Mental Health Nurses communicate and engage with mentally disabled individuals, especially in a group setting. The group aspect of the unit explores the dynamics of this form of intervention as well as exploring the dynamics of groups in general. Students are expected to peer support each other in pairs and develop lab based activities to demonstrate their professional development. It combines counselling and personal dynamics theory with that of new material which explores groups, group activities and behaviours and individuals working within groups. Moreover, this unit addresses how mental health nurses adapt these activities and techniques to their own clinical practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To articulate an understanding of group and personal dynamics;
- To apply counselling theory in group therapy situations;
- To describe basic models of human motivation;
- To analyze self in terms of at least one factor that affects one's motivation;
- To establish a class climate that supports effective interaction with one another.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate familiarity with different types of groups, including their formation, structure, function, power distribution, and member motivation;
- Describe personal attitudes about individuals with mental illness and the influence these attitudes have on counselling provision;
- Discuss the indications for and the implementation of the various counselling modalities that can be implemented for the client;
- Examine how group dynamics, processes, and therapeutic aspects are cultivated and experienced within various group contexts.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand non-verbal and paralinguistic communication;
- Apply that knowledge to improving students' communication with others, including how they perceive them and how students are perceived by others;
