TITLE Cultural Sensitivity and Spirituality in Mental Health Care

DESCRIPTION Students are prepared to become aware of their own strengths as sustained by their core values, spirituality and also their cultural identity. Topics related to self care, and creative care are presented and discussed. An overview of different religious worldviews of human pain and suffering is presented. These worldviews are examined in terms of their potential to either support or inhibit healing from physical and psychological suffering. Moreover, cultural diversity is broken down into its varied components. Students are guided to develop the ability to provide culturally sensitive approaches to care. An integrative approach will assist students to be aware of the own cultural and spiritual dimensions, in order to approach their people trusted in their care with optimal sensitivity in order to identify appropriate interventions, in the service of patients' holistic wellbeing.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To address the issues of cultural and spiritual diversity;
- To provide tools to understand one’s own cultural and spiritual heritage and beliefs;
- To help students develop the ability to provide culturally and spiritually sensitive approaches to care, especially in a mental health setting;
- To identify appropriate interventions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and acknowledge one's own cultural and spiritual heritage, including one's values, biases, and subjectivity and how it impacts one's attitudes in providing care;
- Describe the various components in culture and spirituality;
- Identify and demonstrate appropriate cultural and spiritual sensitivity in one's approach to providing care;
- Differentiate between 'cultural knowledge, cultural awareness', 'cultural sensitivity', and 'cultural competence';
- Outline culturally-competent healthcare;
- Summarize cultural issues of concern in healthcare;
- Conduct a cultural self-assessment;
- Outline the dynamics of difference;
- Value and respect diversity.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Clarify one's own values through psychometric tests;
- Respect other people's values, particularly of those under their care, who may have different cultural and/or spiritual background;
- Realise how one's attitudes may further or hinder professional care;
- Adjust and respond in their professional care with spiritual and cultural sensitivity for optimal wellness of their patients in their care.
