DESCRIPTION | The study-unit incorporates the basic principles of education in relation to mental health nursing. Additionally, the study-unit focuses on applying these principles to practice in preparation for the transition from a student to a novice practitioner. Topics include: - Learning in the clinical environment as a novice practitioner; - Shared learning with the multidisciplinary team; - Being a mentor to others in the clinical environment; - The act of delivering psychoeducation to care receivers; - Reflective practice; - Clinical supervision. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - Prepare the student to avail of learning opportunities in the clinical environment as a novice practitioner; - Enhance the student's knowledge and responsibility in the role of a mentor in the clinical environment; - Enable students to develop the necessary skills to deliver effective psychoeducation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Be aware of the different roles of the mental health nurse in education; - Describe how to create and make the best use of teaching and learning opportunities in practice. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply principles of education to facilitate his/her own learning in the clinical environment; - Teach students in the clinical area; - Deliver psychoeducation to care receivers.
