DEPARTMENT Mental Health

DESCRIPTION This unit teaches students to conceptualise their practice within a pluralistic model of counseling, by exploring theoretical approaches to counseling and psychotherapy and their associated ways of responding to them. This unit is academic in nature. It is not intended to produce fully trained therapists nor to give any certification in the practice learned thereof.

However, this unit will give the students practical tools and techniques that are very useful in practice, specifically with a focus on Trauma Informed Care (TIC), Low Intensity CBT, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (bMBCT), ACT, MT, and Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT), amongst other related tools and techniques. The practice of common intervention methods include psychological therapies (e.g. TIC, CBT, bMBCT, ACT, MT, and DBT), and emphasize the effective communication to service users, collaboration, and choice within person-centred nursing.

The unit is divided in two parts: One, mostly focusing on the theoretical underpinnings on selected therapies, while also offering simulated practice, utilising skills in a range of approaches, as mentioned earlier; and two, Practical sessions through triads, which focus on work in collaborative relationships in mental health contexts, understanding when and why interventions are used, and skills in applying interventions.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to:
- Explore interventions used in mental health care;
- Provide students with a good working knowledge of the key strategies for responding to service-user and societal needs, and the understanding they need to recognize and work with different interventions in a range of contexts;
- Equip students with knowledge of what interventions are used in mental health settings and services.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Appriase the role, function and philosophies of mental health nursing;
- Conceptualize and debate challenges to health and well-being and how interventions used are influenced locally and abroad;
- Discuss models for understanding health, well-being and illness and the origins of the range of interventions commonly used in mental health nursing;
- Discuss the evidence based underpinning approaches to interventions addressing a range of common emotional problems;
- Communicate the potential benefits of a range of interventions;
- Analyse different theories including person centered care (PCC), trauma informed practice, CBT, and the role of collaborative conversations in finding shared understandings with clients.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify, locate and evaluate evidence for interventions for mental health problems (inc. self-harm, suicide, anxiety, depression, psychosis) and recognising deterioration;
- Implement the practice of common intervention methods, including psychological therapies (e.g. Low intensity CBT, Trauma Informed practice, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Interventions (bMBCT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Metaphor Therapy (MT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT);
- Augment and enhance the effective communication to service users, collaboration, and choice within person-centred nursing.
