DESCRIPTION This study-unit deals with ethical issues that arise in the three major areas of criminal justice: police, courts, and corrections. Before delving into these issues, various philosophical ethical theories and how these may be used in decision making will be presented. These insights will then be applied to the institutional and personal behavior of the police as well as the agents of the courts and correctional systems. Some ethical issues related to international criminal justice and the role of physicians in criminal justice will also be discussed.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to present and examine the historical evolution of justice and ethical thought in Western philosophy and how this might help the analysis and evaluation of ethical decision making in policing, sentencing and corrections today.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- compare various ethical theories and approaches to dealing with ethical dilemmas;
- describe how these ethical theories give rise to different resolutions to these dilemmas and how they lead to different conceptions of punishment;
- describe the development of international criminal justice and the ethical issues this brings about.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyze and evaluate ethical decision making opportunities in criminal justice;
- articulate an informed opinion about clear and consistent ethical decisions in criminal justice.
