DESCRIPTION | The dissertation seeks to help the students master the ability to critically appraise, develop and apply research skills and methodologies to reflect on how any aspect of daily life has consequences for Environmental Ethics. The study-unit will also prepare students with the necessary skills to read critically, reflect and interpret published research on their area of research. Through their respective supervisors, it will also offer research methods' skills to the student, depending on the needs of their particular dissertation topic and their own professional background. Students will be equipped with the strong foundation necessary to conduct academic research at the Masters level. Study-unit Aims: The overall aim of the dissertation is to allow students to focus on a particular area of interest, ideally related to their own professional expertise, in order to reflect systematically and analytically on the kind of contribution they could make to the study and practice of environmental ethics from their field. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: i. acquire research methods' skills, in particular those necessary for the particular study; ii. enhance the competence in doing bibliographic research and sourcing material; iii. critically evaluate published research and other sources for their ethical reflection; iv. organize ethical arguments systematically and articulate them clearly and persuasively; iv. depending on kind of area of study chosen, designing quantitative or qualitative research. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: i. do quantitative, qualitative or bibliographic research; ii. do critical reflection and writing; iii. articulate ideas systematically; iv. encourage ongoing research and development in competence in the field of their choosing. |
