| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is intended as an introduction to the life and spirituality of St. Theresa of Jesus, one of the most privileged, loyal and inspirational daughters the Church has ever known. Since she is a prolific writer, we will concentrate on introducing her written works, which are spiritual classics. Apart from her works and from her great inspirational thoughts in spirituality, St. Theresa of Avila, enlightens readers through her experience and distinguishes herself as a woman in her life, in her consciousness and in the style of her femininity. Fourteen hours will be given by a foreign expert on St. Theresa, who will comment one of her major works. Study-Unit Aims: By the end of the course, participants will: - be acquainted with the person and works of a major Christian Reformer and writer. - manage to grasp the language used in spiritual theology to better understand their own and others’ spiritual journey. - appreciate the particularity of female writings in the Christian tradition. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - engage critically with of one of the major female authors of Christian Mysticism. - use the hermeneutical tools, with the help also fo feminist studies, for an in-depth analysis of a mystical text. - apply theological theory to the dynamics of the interior life. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - appreciate spiritual and mystical language from a literary point of view. - get hermeneutic skills that enable a proper understanding of texts and their meaning. - place texts and authors in their historical and ecclesiological context.
