DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides practical instruction in the basic techniques and skills of percussion playing. Students will be guided towards competence in instrumental playing, the study of appropriate repertoire, the development of interpretation, as well as the acquisition of higher music reading skills, and the acquiring of both tonal and technical command. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to help students develop basic knowledge, understanding and skills of percussion playing with emphasis on basic percussion techniques on a range of both tuned and untuned percussion instruments. Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) attain knowledge of percussion instruments and origins; b) acquire strong recognition of rhythmic concepts; c) acquire foundation knowledge of percussion instruments across different contexts. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) demonstrate technical abilities on tuned and untuned percussion instruments; b) perform in front of an audience; c) acquire an ability to read varied music notations; d) internalize basic rhythms and pulse; e) explore various possibilities of the application of percussion instruments in a performance or workshop; f) demonstrate the ability of working in a team. ADDITIONAL NOTES | Primary / Intermediate level of knowledge and technique in Percussion. Non-music studies students are required to sit for an audition. |
