DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to Jazz Music and the way it has developed into a complete and independent idiom which has strongly influenced many aspects of contemporary music. The unit features a chronological examination and analysis of the styles, the more influential soloists, groups, and composers through the use of tapes and films. Students will develop a knowledge of the periods, styles, and forms of this music, and will receive guidance in researching materials outside of the classroom. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims at: a) instilling a basic understanding of the theoretical and cultural models that have helped in the shaping of Jazz Music; b) making the student aware of the different styles characteristic of each period; c) giving the student a basic knowledge of the work of the major jazz composers and soloists. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) recognize the different styles and technical abilities specific to the periods under review; b) recognize the voices and the styles of the important masters and their influences on other players and genres. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) relate different styles of music characteristic to specific periods; b) listen to music in a deeper analytical way; c) place her/his musical interests into a wider historical perspective.
