DESCRIPTION This study-unit is aimed to develop the student’s voice through the understanding and application of a good vocal technique in a varied repertoire. Students will explore and perform a selection of vocal works in different styles. All students who would like to choose this study-unit are required to sit for an audition.
Only successful students will be allowed to register for this course.

Study-Unit Aims:

1. Develop a singer's vocal technique in terms of:
a. breath and vocal support;
b. tone production;
c. vocal strength;
d. flexibility and ability to create dynamic contrasts.
2. develop a singer’s ability to choose repertoire best suited to his/her voice within the fields of popular music and musical theatre;
3. develop the singer’s musical and interpretative skills;
4. develop the singer’s performance skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Recognise basic vocal techniques used in pop and musical theatre;
2. Identify basic vocal training methods;
3. Practice basic vocal exercises.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Distinguish a variety of vocal applications in the context of popular music and musical theatre;
2. Investigate performance practice in popular music and musical theatre;
3. Consolidate vocal techniques into a successful performance.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite Qualifications: Intermediate level of knowledge and technique in singing. All students are required to sit for an audition. The audition will be held during the period prior to registering for the study-unit.
