| DESCRIPTION | Students are expected to write and submit for examination a long essay of 4,000 words related to an aspect of wind band studies. The 4,000 word limit should be exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. Students should register for this study-unit at the beginning of the second year of studies, but the topic must be chosen during the second semester of their first year, after consultation with the respective long essay supervisor. The general outline of the intended topic should be expounded on the Long Essay Proposal which will be submitted on the appropriate form and approved by the Music Studies Board. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this long essay are to: (a) enable students to give extended focus to an approved research topic; (b) foster independent learning and a self-critical attitude; (c) develop the skills and critical powers to conduct research independently; (d) cultivate professional standards in writing. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding of the research topic; (b) evaluate original sources; (c) implement the right methodology for the chosen research topic; (d) research and synthesize critically the selection of data and findings. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) discuss issues of social and cultural significance and analyse them critically through the application of academic concepts and theories; (b) synthesise project management skills; (c) evaluate and systematize data and present academic arguments in a form that is accessible to a variety of readers.
