DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to give students a defined understanding of arranging principles through the study of Jazz and Popular music works. Through the practical investigation of a broad range of melody and arrangement concepts, students will establish a practical knowledge of basic arranging principles in contemporary music.

Study-unit Aims:

1) The ability to think and work with originality and creative independence;
2) The enhancement of proficiency in a variety of arranging techniques;
3) The ability to work confidently with the tools and materials of contemporary styles.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) interpret underlying theoretical principles in western popular music coherently;
(2) demonstrate and apply musical phrasing;
(3) write music arrangements music correctly using conventional notation and employing the use of chord symbols.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(1) administer sound judgment in the use of arranging techniques for a range of ensembles;
(2) apply coherent understanding of transposition concepts;
(3) demonstrate the effective use of harmonic structures and sequences in music derived from western popular music.
