DESCRIPTION The study-unit consists of seminars, critical discussions and musical assignments in which the role of music in dance is tackled. The unit will make references to the main composers that have contributed to modern and contemporary ballet during the last 100 years.

This study-unit provides students with the possibility to focus on developing the necessary skills for working with choreographers in creating new works for the stage.

Counting on a collaboration with the new Dance Studies Department, students will compose a short piece for a performance at the end of the semester.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at:

a) developing the practical and intellectual knowledge for composing music for dance;
b) making the student aware of the wide range of musical styles, idioms and technical abilities which are needed in this area;
c) preparing the student to acquire a positive and creative approach while collaborating with other artists and specifically with choreographers;
d) giving the student a basic understanding of dance as an art form.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) know the basic compositional techniques and processes for making music for dance;
b) know and understand the strategic use of style, instrumentation, tempo and colour, while relating music to a choreographic work;
c) discuss in-depth the relationship between body movement and music;
d) recognise the importance and benefits of choreomusical collaborations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) compose a short (5-10 min) work that demonstrates her/his technical prowess in handling various compositional tools in connection to a contemporary dance piece.

Musical scores, audio recordings and videos of representative works will be made available by the lecturer.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES Intermediate knowledge of Music Theory and interest in Music Composition.
