DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to offer further study of practical flute performance. The lectures will involve the presentation of prepared and pre-assigned repertoire, the interpretation of musical styles on the above mentioned repertoire, technical study of technique, listening to and analysis of recordings and written materials and public performance. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to develop the abilities of flutists in order to give them greater performance skills. Through this study-unit, the developing musician should gain basic knowledge of their instrument - its history and development - as well as repertoire and historical context. The musician should then be able to adapt this knowledge, in conjunction with practical study and tutelage, in the presentation of short public performances. The unit aims to have students learn major and minor scales work on a series on pieces for public presentation and be able to discuss these pieces as part of the preparation for the above mentioned public performance. Specific attention will be placed on repertoire as listed in repertoire lists filed with the Music Studies Programme. 1. Knowledge By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • present a series of prepared technical requirements for evaluation; • present a public performance of twenty minutes duration, involving repertoire studies during lessons; • have a greater understanding of musical styles and repertoire in relation to the development of the flute. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • play scales and technical requirements in all major and minor keys; • have a basic understanding of the different requirements of flute repertoire and their performance; • understand and prepare a short recital for public presentation (including programme notes).
