DESCRIPTION This study-units builds on the technical and interpretative skills introduced in Year 1. It aims at consolidating and furthering the technical and interpretative abilities of the student whilst at the same time exposing him/her to the intricacies of various musical styles and interpretations. It will enable to perform with technical proficiency, beauty, control and consistency. The study-unit will help students build up a varied repertoire of pieces from the different eras of Western music history.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to

a) assist students perform a wide variety of music for brass from different musical periods to develop interpretative skills;
b) enable students listen systematically and critically to a wide variety of brass music from different eras;
c) demonstrate an aural perception of the music to be played;
d) help students of brass convey their feelings and understanding of the expressive and stylistic features of the chosen pieces.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) recognise the existing repertoire for his/her instrument;
b) evaluate in depth the musical structure of a piece and the implications of that on interpretation and the application of technique;
c) recognise the stylistic features of a piece and its interrelationship with the musical style most characteristic of the era it represents.

Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) demonstrate a higher level of technical and interpretative ability;
b) produce a richer and a more controlled tone;
c) approach and interpret a piece intelligently and with the appropriate artistic disposition.
