DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to follow from and build upon the practical instruction on the art of Flute performance. Practical lessons will involve presentation of preselected and prepared repertoire and technical requirements as well as research through various media, including (but not limited to) books, recordings, videos and internet research. Aims: The unit aims to provide students with an initial understanding of the development of performance skills through the development of instrumental technique and musical prowess with a view towards the presentation of public performance. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • prepare and present a recital of not less than 35 minutes duration (including programme notes); • be familiar with at leave five pieces of repertoire from the major periods of classical music; • have a basic understanding of the texts and period reference materials on the flute. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • have significant technical skills for the interpretation of flute music (articulation, dynamic control, vibrato and tone colour) as well as the ability to apply these to their growing list of repertoire.
