DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds up on the knowledge and technique of percussion playing attained in Performance 1: Percussion. Students will focus on advanced technical aspects of percussion playing. The study-unit will also cover aspects such as the physical properties of the instrument, and the psychology of percussion playing.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
a) lead students to more demanding technical exercises;
b) assist students to extend their knowledge of percussion instruments;
c) help students acquire the stamina and endurance required in percussion playing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) value the importance of daily practice which is necessary to achieve good percussion technique;
b) show recognition of complex time signatures;
c) demonstrate strong knowledge of musical structure.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. demonstrate good posture and correct handling of sticks/mallets;
b. make a proper use of the mind and body;
c. reinforce through practice the study of music theory.
